Morphological Description: Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816), most dominant species along the Portuguese coast, plays an important role in ecosystem functioning. Can be found mainly in rocky habitats at different depths. It basically herbivorous and variations of available food can affect their reproduction (gametogenesis, maturation, number and size of eggs). Due to human impact to which it is subject, as a gastronomic delicacy appreciated in many countries, it is increasingly difficult to catch specimens of reasonable size, along the coast in shallow waters.
